11-11-11-11 A Special Remembrance Day

In the UK and British Commonwealth at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011, the nations will pause.

We will fall silent and take two minutes to reflect on the sacrifice of our brave Service men and women from conflicts past and present. We will commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts such as  India, Palestine, Malaya, Korea, Suez Canal Zone, Kenya, Cyprus, Suez 1956,  Borneo, Vietnam, Aden, Radfan, Oman, Dhofar, Northern Ireland, the Falklands War, the Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The silence represents the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, when the guns of Europe fell silent.

In the UK the custodian of Rememberance Day is The Royal British Legion  http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/

A few personal articles of WWI and WWII from my own family. The ‘sweetheart’ cards were bought and posted home by servicemen and women in France.
